“Do not take life too seriously. You will never get out of it alive.” — Elbert Hubbard
From the desk of Richard Du, Founder and Chairman of SANTOS Holdings
At SANTOS Holdings, we’re passionate about transforming our city, one building at a time. But for us, it’s not just about bricks and mortar; it’s about building communities and creating spaces where people can thrive. And honestly, a little laughter along the way makes the journey that much sweeter.
I’ve always believed that a sharp mind and a sharp sense of humor are a powerful combination. I try to bring that to every meeting, every project. Why make zoning regulations sound like a dry textbook when you can turn them into a stand-up routine?
My team knows I value their ideas, and I try to create an environment where everyone feels comfortable contributing, even if it’s just a silly joke, to break the tension.
One sunny Monday, we were gathered in our (admittedly slightly cramped) office, blueprints scattered amidst coffee mugs and a rather excessive collection of rubber ducks. “Alright, team,” I announced, waving a blueprint like a magician revealing his grand finale, “Our next big adventure: The Blue Ocean in Chinatown!” My vision was clear: a community hub, a cultural melting pot, with the best food, service, and atmosphere imaginable. And, of course, who could resist a rooftop garden?
That’s when one of our interns raised his hand. “Uh, Richard,” he asks, “do you think we can fit a rooftop garden on a building that’s only seven or eight stories tall?”
I grinned. “Of course! We’ll just make it a very exclusive garden party. Organic kale smoothies, anyone? High-rise living at its finest!”
That’s how we approach things at SANTOS Holdings. We dream big, brainstorm creatively, and never take ourselves too seriously. We dove into research, understanding that we’re not just building properties; we’re creating homes, businesses, and memories. We needed to know what the locals wanted. More bubble tea shops? (Hopefully, not another nail salon!)
I made it a point to connect with the community, showing up at neighborhood meetings with homemade baked goods. Nothing says “I care” like a blueberry muffin, right? It’s a way to build trust and show we’re genuinely invested in their concerns.
The excitement for the Blue Ocean project was palpable. But then, disaster struck. During a crucial meeting, an architect accidentally knocked over our scale model of the building. Tiny plastic trees and miniature people went flying everywhere – a scene straight out of a slapstick comedy.
“Alright, team,” I announced, trying to keep things light,”Change of plans! We’re having a ‘Model Meltdown Workshop’! Free coffee for everyone who helps pick up the pieces!”
And you know what? It worked. The mood shifted from panic to camaraderie. We gathered around the floor, reassembling the model and sharing jokes and stories. Someone even suggests selling tickets to the “Model Meltdown” as a team-building exercise.
That moment crystallized what SANTOS Holdings is all about. We’re a team, a family. If we can survive a model disaster, we can handle anything. With renewed energy, we went back to the drawing board, brainstorming innovative solutions for the Blue Ocean.
As I looked around at my team, laughing and working together, I knew we were building something special. Something that would not only transform the city skyline but also bring joy and laughter to the community. And that, to me, is the best reward of all.
Remember, if your plans go awry, just gather the pieces and build something even better! And if all else fails, just add more muffins!
